Matthews chamber to host ArtFest event
The Matthews Chamber of Commerce will host an ArtFest of Matthews Preview Party on Sept. 26, a Thursday, from 5 to 8 p.m.
The event, dubbed “An Evening in Tuscany,” takes place at SAVOUR, 1081 Matthews-Mint Hill Road in Matthews, and features fine art, hors d’oeuvres, wine, desserts, music, dancing, a raffle and a live auction featuring prizes such as a vacation for 10 days in a Tuscan villa.

Call for artists for September show
It’s almost time for Mint Hill Arts’ annual September Peoples’ Choice Art Exhibit, and the nonprofit is issuing a call for artists among the community to contribute original artwork to the show.
All types of artwork are welcome. Intake for the show is Sept. 6, a Friday, from 4 to 6 p.m. and Sept. 7, a Saturday, from 10 a.m. to noon. Entry fees are $10 per artist for Mint Hill Arts members and $20 per artist for nonmembers.
An opening reception featuring refreshments is slated for Sept. 13, a Friday, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Mint Hill Arts Gallery, 11205 Lawyers Road, suite A. The event is open to the public.
Judging categories for the Peoples’ Choice Exhibit include: best in show, most beautiful, funniest, most creative and best “junk” art. The public will have all month to vote and can cast their ballots at the Mint Hill Arts Gallery. Winners will receive a certificate and will be announced at the opening reception for Mint Hill Arts’ October show.
Queen City Ballroom to present ‘A Night on Broadway’
Queen City Ballroom is going Broadway for a one-night-only performance on Saturday, Aug. 24, at 8 p.m. at Spirit Square’s McGlohon Theatre in uptown Charlotte.
“A Night on Broadway” will feature professional and pro-am dancers who will perform a ballroom and Latin dance variety show choreographed by acclaimed dancer Wendy Johnson.

Fall classes coming to Mint Hill Arts
Fall 2013 is rapidly approaching, and Mint Hill Arts is gearing up for a handful of new classes beginning in September.
Classes include age-specific Art for Home School Students, Acting Fun with Children’s Stories, Drawing and Painting, Abstract Landscape Painting, Portfolio Development for Teens, Painting the Nocturnal Landscape and more. Most classes have two sessionst typically running from early September to mid-October, and late October to early December.

‘Shark!’ at Discovery Place lab
Discovery Place’s Explore More Collections Lab will host “Shark!” – a program designed to teach visitors more about sharks – through the end of August.
Families will dive into the mystery of the shark, what makes sharks “magnificent, majestic” sea creatures and why people should be aware of the animals and respect them. The lab will offer different shark artifacts to examine and shark teeth fossils to uncover each

Pottery 51 to host ‘First Friday’ Sept. 6
Pottery 51 will host its monthly First Friday open house on Sept. 6, a Friday, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. The event features wine and cheese, as well as the chance to view Mint Hill-made pottery.
The event will feature local artists Max McLeod and Brenda Roberts. McLeod is known for organic work mixing clay colors, and Roberts’ specialties are leaf decorations, bowls, pitchers, trays and other decorative items.
