Support middle school athletics
Area middle schools are asking community members to support middle school athletics by participating in the third annual Big South 5K Road Race Oct. 20.
The event, which raised almost $30,000 during its first two years, will take place at the Blakeney Shopping Center in south Charlotte and benefits middle schools in both Charlotte-Mecklenburg and Union county schools. Following the race, community members also are encouraged to stay for the 6th Annual Boo! Bash in the shopping center.
People can register as individuals, community teams or corporate teams at www.bigsouth5k.com. Registration is $20 through Oct. 12. The race begins at 8 a.m.
Covenant Day to host admissions open house
Covenant Day School, a Christian transitional kindergarten through 12th-grade school, will host its admission open house Oct. 24, a Wednesday, beginning at 9:30 a.m.
The event is for families who are interested in learning more about Christian education at the school. Parents will have the opportunity to explore Covenant Day, watch classes in action, talk with current parents, take a campus tour and hear from the school’s teachers and principals.
The school is located at 800 Fullwood Lane in Matthews.

Showing creativity for cash
The North Carolina School Boards Association, or NCSBA, is asking high schools student to show their creativity in a “What’s Super About Public Schools?” video contest.
The contest, which will help students win cash for their schools, is asking students to make a 30- to 45-second video conveying the “What’s Super About Public Schools?” theme. Videos can be a commercial, news broadcast, music video or whatever format the student decides. The top three videos will win cash prizes for their schools with first place at $5,000, second place at $2,500 and third place at $1,000.
The top three videos along with those identified by the judges as honorable mentions, will be posted on NCSBA’s YouTube site. Entries must be submitted online at www.ncsba.org and are due by Oct. 12.
