Matthews-based HealthSource Chiropractic and Progressive Wellness offers free massage therapy for teachers throughout the school year as a way to relax and de-stress in the hopes of boosting morale.
The program, which reaches schools in Mecklenburg and Union counties, is dubbed Community Heroes Day. Staff most recently visited Lebanon Road Elementary in Mint Hill and soon hope to expand the program to include first responders.
“The program rewards our ‘Community Heroes,’ while also providing assistance with donations, fundraisers, health fairs and other events,” said Dr. Joe Musacchio, chiropractor with HealthSource of Matthews.
Over the past two years, HealthSource has partnered with Albemarle Road Elementary, Bain Elementary, Brookstone School, Butler High School, Crestdale Middle, Greenway Park Elementary, Idlewild Elementary, Lebanon Road Elementary and Piney Grove Elementary for the program.
“The stress relief massages boost morale among the staff and provide a little pick-me-up,” Musacchio said. “For example, one school representative (said) ‘Those people were smiling the whole day, morale was raised and they were telling anyone who would listen how great it was to be treated to a massage.’”
HealthSource Chiropractic is a nationwide chiropractic organization with about 400 offices and the Matthews office also with the HealthSource location in Monroe for the Community Heroes program.
“These programs are run in all of the communities that HealthSource serves,” Musacchio said.
But Community Heroes Day doesn’t end with the massages.
“In addition to our goal of rewarding community heroes, we hope to educate the public on important health and wellness issues,” Musacchio said. “We offer free lectures to the schools that benefit the staff, students and parents. We would like to extend this educational program to the rest of our community.”
