Pumpernickel Kids now open
Matthews is now home to a new children’s consignment shop.
Latasha Hankerson recently purchased a consignment shop at 11014 Monroe Road, suite B, renaming it Pumpernickel Kids. The married mother of 5-year-old and 16-month-old children said it’s her first store, though she operated an online children’s business before purchasing the shop.
A grand opening celebration, including free refreshments, children’s activities and a sidewalk sale, will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, March 31.
The shop offers children’s clothing, accessories, books, toys and more. Maternity clothes and a newly added women’s clothing and accessories boutique also are available. Hankerson, of Indian Trail, said the shop now has more than 450 consigners, with 100 who have started since she bought the shop in late January.
“I’m just praying that it will keep continuing to grow,” Hankerson said, adding that she hopes to open other locations.
Pumpernickel Kids is open Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call 704-849-7677. No appointment is needed for consignments.
Remember Me This Way closes

The business opened in July in the B.G. Walters Center at the intersection of Lawyers and Matthews-Mint Hill roads. Owner David Gaskin couldn’t be reached by press time and it was unclear if the shop would re-open in another location.

The Hill Bar & Grill, 11232 Lawyers Road in Mint Hill, will celebrate its one-year anniversary with a party open to the public.
From noon to 10 p.m. Saturday, April 14, the restaurant will offer live music, a corn hole tournament, wing-eating contest, children’s activities and more.

Carolinas Natural Health adds doctor
Dr. Peter Swanz has joined the staff of Carolinas Natural Health Center, 1126 Sam Newell Road, suite A, in Matthews.
Swanz is a board certified naturopathic physician and a fellow of the Homeopathic Association of Naturopathic Physicians. He graduated in 2005 from the Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine in Tempe, Ariz., where he met fellow Carolinas Health physician, Dr. Michael Smith.
The move to Matthews also will put Swanz and his two daughters closer to family, he said.
“This was a really great opportunity and it seems to be coupled with bringing family closer together and to be part of what I think is a growing community,” he said. “I like the transplant communities. It always seems more friendly to me.”
In Matthews, Swanz said he already sees “a true passion for the people to be well. The patients that are coming to see us, they’re not expecting us to fix their problems, they’re really coming in looking for information and support and to get at the root cause.”
Swanz specializes in classical homeopathy for children and the entire family. He has advanced training in nutrition, weight loss and blood sugar control and natural hormone and endocrine balancing.
