By April 2, state crews are expected to begin work to replace the bridge on Sam Newell Road near Crown Point Elementary School in Matthews.
The bridge, between Lakeview Circle and Hargett Road, was built in 1945 and is considered “structurally deficient and functionally obsolete,” according to a news release from the N.C. Department of Transportation. The state has awarded a $1.5 million contract to Blythe Construction of Charlotte to replace the bridge. The new bridge will have three lanes, including sidewalks on both sides, and utilities and a waterline will be moved as part of the project, according to a news release from the town. The bridge will be constructed to allow for a future town greenway to run under it.
About 13,000 vehicles use Sam Newell Road daily, the town release said.
Sam Newell Road will close to all traffic on April 9 between Lakeview Circle and Hargett Road and remain closed until Aug. 20. All school traffic should use the marked detour route: accessing Sam Newell Road from Margaret Wallace Road. The road will be closed until at least Aug. 20 and some partial closures may be necessary as landscaping work continues until about
