Signal change coming to N.C. 51

As early as this summer, motorists will notice the installation of a flashing yellow left-hand turn signal at the intersection of N.C. 51 and Fullwood Lane in Matthews, according to Jen Thompson of the N.C. Department of Transportation.

But the signal will only be operational from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. “when traffic volumes are much lower and the gaps are larger” to allow motorists to turn left safely, Matthews Town Manager Hazen Blodgett said in a memo. The town requested that the intersection be studied for the new light to move traffic through the intersection faster, he said.

A January one-day traffic count of the intersection saw 32,727 vehicles pass through the intersection, according to records from the department.
