Donations, volunteers needed for event to benefit special-needs students
by Kara Lopp
A prom-type party for area special-needs students at Carmel Baptist Church sold out in just three days.
Tickets for the church’s Joy Prom are free, but advanced online reservations are required. Sign-ups began Sunday, April 1, and by Tuesday, April 3, were gone, according to event website www.joyprom.org. A waiting list, though, is available online.
What the event doesn’t yet have is enough volunteers or donated jewelry and accessories to help the ladies shine. The two-day event is April 27 and 28 and includes free photos, make-up and accessories for the ladies and shoe shines for the guys. Students ages 16 and older also will enjoy a dessert banquet, walk the red carpet and, of course, plenty of dancing.
The event also is sponsored by Five Stones Church.
Volunteers are needed to act as servers, hosts and even “paparazzi” to take photos of the students and create excitement during the students’ walk down the red carpet.

Donations of new jewelry and hair accessories for female students are needed. Drop off donations in the lobby of Carmel Baptist Church, 1145 Pineville-Matthews Road. Financial contributions can be made online.
All free event tickets have been reserved, but area special-needs students can sign up to be added to a waiting list at the website.
