The Town of Matthews is in negotiations with the U.S. Post Office to buy 1 acre off East John Street for $200,000, according to a news release from the town.
The post office land is adjacent to the Matthews Post Office at 301 E. John St. and has already been identified in the town’s master plan for use as a public parking lot or other town facility, the release said.
“Property in our downtown core is not readily available and postal officials knew that we were interested in purchasing this property if it became available,” Matthews Town Manager Hazen Blodgett said in the release. “There are no immediate plans for its development. We are in the process of updating our downtown master plan and we will very carefully plan how to best develop this area of our downtown core.”
