There’s a new way to fight germs while on-the-go. And it hails from Matthews.
Matthews-based Sanear Corporation invented SaniPortables, hand sanitizing gel packets which are now available at Wal-Mart, CVS, Target, Walgreens and Family Dollar.
Company President and CEO James Smith, 45, of Matthews, got the product idea while playing golf, one of his favorite pastimes.
“I was playing golf with a friend of mine who is a doctor,” he said. “We stopped to have lunch, but there was nothing to clean our hands with. I realized it would be great to have a product in a packet that would clean hands and kill germs as well.”
Smith utilized his background in new product development and consulting to come up with the SaniPortables formula.
“I developed the gel based on research,” he said. “I realized that most people get sick from touching something and then rubbing their eyes or nose. The name SaniPortables came first, then the product.”
The final configuration ended up being a foil-lined paper packet that holds enough gel at .057 fluid ounces, to get a pair of dirty hands clean and germ free. In stores, the products sell for $2.79 for a box of 25 packs. They also can be ordered online at www.Saniportables.com for $11.16 for four boxes.
“The packets are convenient and portable,” he said of the 1-inch wide, 2-inch tall packets. “Since the packets are less than 3 ounces in size, there are no issues with travelers taking them through the airport.”
Made of paper with a foil lining, the packets are recyclable, Smith says.
In addition to marketing SaniPortables to the general public, Smith says efforts also are under way to get the packets into the hands of military personnel, the Red Cross, FEMA, schools and other agencies.
Approved by the FDA, the product is said to kill 99.99 percent of germs within 15 seconds and contains aloe vera and an added fragrance.
Smith and his wife, Monique, attend Little Rock AME Zion Church where he often volunteers by mentoring students ages 14 to 18 on topics such as entrepreneurship and product development.
“I want to make the world a healthier place with this product,” he said.
