Matthews will spend $23,400 over the next year to hire Union County’s AA TexLawn for landscape maintenance along N.C. 51.
Town commissioners voted Monday, April 23, to use tourism money for the one-year contract. The company will be responsible for mowing, edging and other landscaping along N.C. 51 medians and sidewalks. Town crews now spend about a day and a half each week maintaining the road, Public Works Director Ralph Messera said. The move will allow town landscape crews to focus on other areas of town, including the newly re-opened Squirrel Lake Park, he said.
