The Town of Matthews will host two free events Saturday, April 14 to highlight the newly opened Four Mile Creek Greenway and a renovated Squirrel Lake Park. At 10:30 a.m. the town will host a fountain dedication on the greenway, located between the Clearbrook and Matthews Estates subdivision entrances. Then from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. the town will celebrate recent improvements to Squirrel Lake Park,1631 Pleasant Plains Road, with live music and clinics on disc golf and horseshoes.
The park opened in December after a $784,180 facelift, half of which was paid by a grant from the state’s Parks and Recreation Trust Fund. The project includes the addition of new playground equipment, an additional picnic shelter, improvements to existing trails in the park and additional spaces in the parking lot. A handicap-accessible fishing pier built by the North Carolina Wildlife Commission also was installed.
Residents who come to the celebration are encouraged to park at Matthews Elementary School or Matthews Community Center and walk the greenway to the park.
