The intersection of Trade and John streets in downtown Matthews will be closed at night from Monday to Wednesday, April 23 to 25, as state crews prepare to install a new traffic signal.
From 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. each day, workers will cut open the pavement to lay conduit for a new traffic signal. The preliminary work will enable crews to add a yellow flashing left-turn signal at the intersection. Flashing yellow arrows mean motorists can turn only after yielding to oncoming traffic and can help to increase efficiency at intersections, officials say.
The following closures are scheduled:
• April 23 – Crews will close Trade Street south of the intersection with John Street. Motorists will be detoured from Trade Street to Fullwood Lane to Matthews Township Parkway back to John Street.
• April 24 and 25 – Crews will close both approaches from John Street to Trade Street. Motorists will be detoured from John Street to Matthews Township Parkway to U.S. 74 (Independence Boulevard) to Interstate 485 back to John Street.
