By 6 a.m. Monday, April 9, state crews are expected to begin work to replace the bridge on Sam Newell Road near Crown Point Elementary School in Matthews.
The project means Sam Newell Road will close to all traffic between Lakeview Circle and Hargett Road until at least Aug. 20. All school traffic should use the marked detour route: accessing Sam Newell Road from Margaret Wallace Road. Some partial closures may be necessary as landscaping work continues until March 2013.
The bridge, between Lakeview Circle and Hargett Road, was built in 1945 over Irvins Creek and is considered “structurally deficient and functionally obsolete,” according to a news release from the N.C. Department of Transportation. The state has awarded a $1.5 million contract to Blythe Construction of Charlotte to replace the bridge. The new bridge will have three lanes, including sidewalks on both sides, and utilities and a waterline will be moved as part of the project, according to a news release from the Town of Matthews The bridge will be constructed to allow for a future town greenway to run under it.
About 13,000 vehicles use Sam Newell Road daily, the town release said.
