A blockage of kitchen grease and debris at 629 Creekwood Court in Matthews caused a wastewater spill Tuesday, April 24, into an Irvins Creek tributary, according to an e-mail alert from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Utilities Department.
An estimated 1,215 gallons of wastewater reached the tributary, according to the alert. No dead fish were found. Creekwood Court is off of Reid Harkey Road.
Utility crews maintain 4,047 miles of wastewater pipe in Mecklenburg County. Sewer charges from monthly water bills fund preventative maintenance, emergency response, and the safe daily delivery of an average of 83 million gallons of wastewater to five treatment plants, where wastewater is treated and released back into waterways.
