Thompson to benefit from health grant

Thompson Child & Family Focus, which has a campus near Matthews, is one of nine Mecklenburg County nonprofits recently awarded a health grant by the Mecklenburg Medical Alliance and Endowment.

Thompson’s Child Development Center received $4,000 for specialized therapeutic support for speech, language and physical therapy for special-needs children up to 5 years old, according to the endowment’s website.

This year’s grants, totaling $44,700, were presented in memory of Jean Gaskin, past endowment president and founder. Among the other recipients were the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office which received $3,900 to buy three automated external defibrillators, or AEDs, for deputy patrol cars and MedAssist of Mecklenburg, which received $5,000 for its school health initiative to provide free medication to low-income, uninsured Mecklenburg children and health education for those who serve children.
