During Sunday services June 17, St. Stephen United Methodist Church will present the Matthews Free Medical Clinic a gift of $47,250. The event will be a celebration of the new partnership between the church and the clinic, according to a news release from the nonprofit.
The money will be used to purchase medical equipment that will enable the clinic to provide additional services to more patients in the community, the release said.
Since 2004, the clinic has treated low-income, uninsured patients in and around Matthews. Since opening, the clinic has experienced double digit increases in patient visits each year and is actively looking for a larger space to accommodate the growing number of patients.
The Matthews Free Medical Clinic provides well patient care, women’s clinics, psychiatry, orthopedics, physical therapy, pharmacy services, diabetes education and treatment of chronic diseases. In 2011, the clinic had more than 3,000 patient visits, with 60 percent of those being Mecklenburg County residents and about 40 percent Union County residents. About 75 percent of the clinic’s patients are female.
