The Community Blood Center of the Carolinas and the local chapter of the American Red Cross sent out alerts this week about a regional blood supply shortage.
Officials say summer is typically a slow time for donor drives and all blood types are urgently needed, especially those in the O blood group.
Nationally, the Red Cross blood supply has reached emergency levels with 50,000 fewer donations than expected in June, according to a news release. This shortfall leaves the Red Cross with half the readily available blood products on hand now than this time last year.
Upcoming blood drives include:
• June 30: 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Morning Star Lutheran Church, 12509 Idlewild Road, Mint Hill
• July 6: 1 to 5:30 p.m., Walgreens, 1220 Matthews Township Pkwy., Matthews
• July 10: 3 to 7 p.m., Siskey YMCA, 3127 Weddington Road, Matthews
•July 16: 1 to 5 p.m., Guided Hands Wellness Spa, 10931 E. Independence Blvd., suite D, Matthews
