Tyler Hager opened burger and steak joint CharBar no. 7 more than a year ago off Carmel Road in south Charlotte. Now the son of the Hickory Tavern founder is ready to make his move into Matthews.
By mid-October The McKee Farms shopping center off Weddington Road will be home to a CharBar no. 7. Despite the restaurant name, it’ll be eatery No. 2 for Hager.
The Charlotte Country Day graduate, who has a bachelor’s degree in business marketing, said he wasn’t planning to open a second location so soon, but the empty end-cap was too good to pass up. CharBar will occupy the former Just Fresh storefront near Dunkin’ Donuts. A customer, who works for the center’s Aston Properties, suggested the Matthews space.
“We’re such a neighborhood bar, which is why we’re so excited about McKee. We are just a comfy restaurant that’s family-friendly, too,” he said. “I think Matthews is such a good, neighborhood-friendly area and I think we’ll fit well there. We can’t get it open soon enough.”
Offering “a premium level experience for a mid-level price,” CharBar serves burgers from $8 to $10; steaks from $16 to $29; salads beginning at $8 and specialty hot dogs on the grill from $6 to $7. Most kid’s menu options range from $4.75 to $5.50 but a five-ounce sirloin steak is available for $8.
CharBar will hire at least 10 cooks and about 15 to 20 servers. Hager will start accepting applications in September.
Already he’s received emails from area residents wondering when the Matthews shop will open.
“I can tell there’s a lot of support in that area already,” Hager said.
