Internet sweepstakes cafes have new parking rules

In order to alleviate parking issues created by Internet sweepstakes cafes, Matthews Board of Commissioners approved a revision of the parking standards for these businesses during their meeting on Monday, Aug 13.

Planning Director Kathi Ingrish gave a presentation to town commissioners during a public hearing on the issue last month. Ingrish explained how Internet sweepstakes businesses have a higher intensity parking use than standard retail businesses, since those who play are adults, and most drive individually.

The standards require Internet sweepstakes cafes to set aside one parking space per individual gaming station within the café.
