Matthews Alive! hopes to help nonprofits year-round

For nearly 20 years local nonprofits have benefited from Matthews Alive!, and now the festival will extend itsinfluence to donate year-round with the new Matthews Alive! Foundation.

The foundation will begin taking donations during the festival, and those who wish to make a donation can find drop boxes at ticket booths and other various locations around the 20th annual Matthews Alive! festival, which runs Aug. 31 to Sept. 3.

“We are extremely excited to announce the Matthews Alive! Foundation to the public this year. I am so proud to be part of a group of people that I do so much good for the community,” Katie Kidd, the Matthews Alive! Foundation coordinator, said.

All proceeds made during the festival and from the Matthews Alive! Foundation will be donated to local nonprofits who provide volunteers for the festival.

To receive money from the newly formed foundation, organizations will have had to volunteer at the festival that year and must submit a grant application.  Once a month, the foundation board members will come together to discuss the applications and award grants, if enough money has been donated, Kidd said.

“We want everyone to know that we need their help to raise money for our foundation. There will be brochures available at the information booth this year. Within each brochure, there is a pledge card where people can make pledges to help us fundraise for the foundation,” Kidd said. “I get so excited when I think what a $5 donation can do, and I hope others at this year’s festival will too.”
