Nonprofit shop marks tax-free weekend, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Backporch Treasures Thrift Boutique at the nonprofit crisis assistance Matthews HELP Center will offer tax-free shopping as part of North Carolina’s tax-free weekend. Sales will include clothing and shoes for children and adults. All proceeds benefit the center.

National Night Out, 5 to 7:30 p.m.
Mint Hill police will host a National Night Out celebration at the Park on Fairview with free food including Chick-fil-A sandwiches, Edy’s Ice Cream, hot dogs, snow cones and more. Officers will provide demonstrations, crime prevention information and safety tips and there will be games for kids, including a dunking booth with Mint Hill officers inside. A representative from the Mecklenburg County District Attorney’s Office, and officers will be on hand to listen to any concerns residents may have.

Ghost stories for teens, 2 p.m.7 to 8:30 p.m.
The Mint Hill Library will host professional storyteller Beth Hutchison who will tell ghost stories geared toward the teen audience.

Sycamore Commons concert series, 6 to 9 p.m.
Matthews’ Sycamore Commons shopping center continues its annual free, live music concert series this week with honky tonk band Loose Lugnuts. The fifth annual Summer Concert Series occurs Thursdays in the courtyard. Sycamore Commons is located off Matthews Township Parkway between U.S. 74 and Northeast Parkway.

‘Fire and water’ exhibit opens, 7 to 9 p.m.
The nonprofit Mint Hill Arts will host a free reception for its juried exhibit, “Fire and Water Do Mix.”
The show will feature two categories: “Water” and “Fire.” The water category will include artwork using watercolor techniques and media and all work submitted in the fire category must be “created by fire,” including ceramics, fused or melted glass, forged, welded, soldered, or cast metal.
Refreshments will be available.

Blood drive, 1:30 to 6 p.m.
First Baptist Church of Matthews will host a blood drive for the Community Blood Center of the Carolinas. Donors must weigh at least 120 pounds.
