Mint Hill’s Park on Fairview will soon be home to a Purple Heart Memorial.
Town commissioners voted Thursday, Oct. 25, to approve the proposal, but the exact location of the memorial has yet to be determined. The board vote followed a favorable recommendation from the town’s volunteer Parks and Recreation Committee to add the memorial to the park. The committee expects to begin work soon on a park “master plan” in order to handle requests like this in the future, Chairman Ron Freeman said.
The memorial was requested by the Charlotte Chapter 634 of the Military Order of the Purple Heart. It will be placed near the under-construction N.C. Korean War Veterans Memorial, but an exact location hasn’t been decided. Town commissioners expect to visit the site within two weeks to choose that location, Mayor Ted Biggers, a veteran himself, said.
“I’m very pleased it was approved,” he said. “I think with the (North Carolina) Korean War (Veterans) Memorial and the future museum there, it’s definitely a place for a memorial such as this that honors our Purple Heart recipients. I’m excited about it because Purple Heart recipients are the ones wounded defending our freedoms and I think it’s a great thing to have it there in the park.”
Raymond Hait, senior vice commander of the Charlotte Purple Heart chapter said previously the group wanted the memorial to be placed near the Korean War site because names on the existing memorial are connected to the Purple Heart designation.
“Every single name on that wall is a name of someone who received a Purple Heart,” he said previously. “They’re not the only ones, but it’s significant. It’s not dedicated to just them; it’s for every veteran who received it. But it deserves to be there, it deserves to be close to that memorial.”
Hait said the stone memorial costs about $6,500 and fundraising will begin now that the plans have been approved.
