American Express encourages people to ‘shop small’

Businesses across Matthews and Mint Hill are gearing up for this year’s Small Business Saturday following the Thanksgiving holiday shopping season.

Small Business Saturday is a program across the country, founded by American Express to promote “shopping small” in communities across the country. The event will take place the Saturday after Thanksgiving, Nov. 30.

Although American Express promotes the shopping event, people do not need to use an American Express credit card to receive discounts.

For some business owners in the area, this is one of the biggest events of the year – something they say is more than appreciated.

“It’s a wonderful thing that (American Express) is doing to promote it,” Connie Kleinburg, owner of Matthews Holiday Haus, said. “The mom and pops are what made this country, and we will make it again. Without them these little towns will disappear.”

And with more big box stores popping up in the area, Kleinburg said it’s more important than ever to promote the smaller businesses, especially with the big box stores, like Walmart, offering the same or similar merchandise as small businesses.

“There is so many big boxes surrounding us. They sell everything the mom and pops sell,” she said. “… Without the mom and pops, these small towns won’t survive.”

American Express began Small Business Saturday in 2010 to help “the corner stores that create jobs. The hardware stores that help build our economy.  And the mom and pop shops whose very presence makes a neighborhood, your neighborhood,” according to its website.

Businesses will hold sales and discounts throughout the day as part of the event, and shoppers can use any method of payment to receive discounts.
