First-year Butler volleyball coach Brian Bistreich has the Bulldogs off to an impressive 6-1 start that includes wins over Southwestern 4A conference foes East Mecklenburg, Myers Park and Rocky River.
“We are serving aggressively and playing defense with discipline and effort,” Bistreich said. “I use this phrase: ‘Serve to score.’ And the (team is) working toward that mentality.”
Junior setter Annaka Beatty, sophomore outside hitter Maxine Glenn and junior libero Emily Barksdale have stood out to Bistreich so far, but the Bulldogs have gotten solid play across the board, as sophomore Rachel Johnson, junior Hannah Joyner and senior Madison Brown are among the team leaders in kills. Senior Amy Boston has been serving well.
Bistreich said he also is happy with the Bulldogs’ start to the season. But added that, going forward, they need to adjust better to passing assignments based on the opposing server and tally more blocks per match.
The Bulldogs travel to Porter Ridge on Tuesday, Sept. 4, before getting a week off as they prepare for defending state champion Providence.
