Covenant Day senior boys basketball player Ben Hawks has committed to continue his career at Columbia International University in Columbia, S.C.
Columbia International officials said Hawks signed a “letter of commitment” on March 25. CIU is a Christian-focused college that begins its inaugural season of play this fall.
“I am very excited about Ben committing to CIU,” Rams coach Kyle Mendenhall said in a CIU press release. “I admire Ben’s faith and courage to step into a new program and become part of something that has never been done before. He is going to be a huge piece to laying our foundation in the upcoming years. Ben is the type of guy that embraces a challenge and rises to the occasion. He is a competitor who leads by example, while influencing others to become better.”
Hawks, a 6-foot-1 point guard, averaged 9.4 points, 3.7 assists and 2.8 rebounds per game for the Lions this season while connecting on 41 percent of his 3-pointers.
According to the press release, Hawks plans on studying Business and Organizational Leadership while pursuing a degree in Bible. During his signing ceremony, Hawks was joined by his Covenant Day teammates, coaches and his parents, Mike and Tammy. Mike Hawks is a longtime assistant football coach at Charlotte Latin.
